เมื่อเดือนพฤษภาคมปีที่แล้ว องค์การสหประชาชาติได้ประกาศให้ปี 2022 เป็นปีแห่งแก้วสากล นับเป็นครั้งแรกที่องค์การสหประชาชาติกำหนดให้ปีเป็นปีด้วยวัสดุเพียงชิ้นเดียว ตอกย้ำบทบาทสำคัญของแก้วที่ขาดไม่ได้และสำคัญในหลายด้าน อาทิ เทคโนโลยี เศรษฐกิจ สิ่งแวดล้อม วัฒนธรรม และสังคม ตลอดจนบทบาทในการสนองตอบต่อ ความท้าทายและสร้างสังคมที่ยั่งยืน สังคมแบบรวม ทำให้เกิดการฟื้นตัวของเศรษฐกิจโลก ส่งเสริมการพัฒนาเทคโนโลยีเกิดใหม่ และการสนับสนุนอื่นๆ อีกมากมาย ในฐานะที่เป็นวัสดุพื้นฐานที่มีประวัติศาสตร์อันยาวนาน แก้วได้เข้าสู่ศูนย์กลางของเวทีโลกอย่างเป็นทางการแล้ว
